The
potential for lectin-based products is staggering. Research has shown
that lectins can be used effectively for treating everything from acne
and periodontal disease to ulcers and sexually transmitted diseases
(STDs).
NutraLec®
Lectin Labs' technology has been validated by human clinical trials
for its initial product, NutraLec, which was launched in 2003. NutraLec
is a functional nutraceutical and is based on a particular
lectin found in wheat grain. The Company has determined that this lectin
acts to neutralize a widespread and potentially deadly pathogen found
in the stomach, Helicobacter pylori. This microorganism is
responsible for a variety of gastric ailments, including gastritis,
ulcers, and stomach cancer (the second leading cause of cancer deaths).
Until now, the only available treatment has been antibiotic regimens
which frequently fail because of antibiotic-resistant strains of H.
pylori. Human trials have shown that NutraLec safely and effectively
brings this infectious microbe under control.
NutraLec is currently being positioned as a functional nutraceutical.

Lectin Labs is also concentrating
its research and development on four other innovative products: PhytoCAM
VM, PhytoCAM Condom, PhytoCAM Ulcer,
and Ultra-Pure Lectins™.
PhytoCAM VM
Public health officials are emphasizing the need for a vaginal
microbicide; women do not currently have a product to
discreetly defend against STDs, and infection rates are soaring. Toward
that end, Lectin Labs is developing a topical cream that can bind with
and destroy the infectious qualities of certain major STDs, including
HIV/AIDS.
PhytoCAM Condom
It has been recently discovered that latex condoms can leak and allow
the passage of viruses, including certain microbes associated with STDs.
Research has shown that any leakage containing infected male ejaculate
or infected vaginal fluid can be neutralized by a lectin-containing
surface coating on the condom. Lectin Labs will develop and manufacture
the coating formulation, while the condom manufacturer will apply the
coating and handle distribution and marketing. This innovative condom
will bind to the pathogens associated with HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, and
chlamydia, and reduce the risk of infection should a condom leak.
PhytoCAM Ulcer
H. pylori is the principal agent causing gastritis, ulcers
and stomach cancer. It's believed that two-thirds of the world's population
has been infected by these bacteria, including 50-percent of all U.S.
residents. Lectin Labs is developing a potent pharmaceutical-grade variant
of the lectin found in NutraLec. This Rx product will be administered
orally in capsule or pill form.
Ultra-Pure
Lectins
Lectins have been of longstanding interest to the research community.
This curiosity has prompted scientists to perform various clinical diagnostic
tests using lectins. It has also helped them identify cellular carbohydrate
structures, and map the surface of many kinds of cells found in biology.
Other clinical research continues to focus on the use of lectins as
injectables to treat AIDS and cancer patients. All of this has created
a growing market for production of certain lectins which would be manufactured
in very small quantities (milligrams) and command premium prices. While
there are a handful of other specialized suppliers of lectins in the
world, their supply is generally limited and impure. Lectin Labs enters
this market with the know-how to manufacture unique and highly purified
products.
Other Product
Opportunities
Lectin Labs has already identified numerous additional opportunities
for its lectin technology, including: DermaLec™ products (acne
treatment, control of body odor); medications for periodontal disease
(for which there is no satisfactory treatment regimen); and topical
treatment for other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (C. difficile
antibiotic-associated colitis and other diarrheal diseases caused by
E. coli and Giardia). Certain lectin formulations
may also be targeted to agricultural and animal diseases.
